Hygrocybe aurantiomagnifica: a new species of section Firmae (Hygrophoraceae, Basidiomycota) from Brazil Alexandre G. S. Silva-Filho1 , Angelina Meiras-Ottoni2 & Felipe Wartchow3

Summary. Hygrocybe aurantiomagnifica (Agaricales), which we describe here as a new species, is characterised by

gregarious basidiomata, yellow to orange pileus with an almost plane, smooth surface and undulate or lobed margin; distant, whitish lamellae becoming pinkish-violet at the edge; absence of cheilocystidia and an enterocutis pileipellis. Morphological along with molecular phylogenetic analyses of the internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) and the nuclear large subunit (nrLSU), confirm H. aurantiomagnifica as a new species of subgenus Pseudohygrocybe section Firmae. A comprehensive morphological description, illustrations, comparisons with related species and a key including similar Brazilian species are provided. Key Words. Agaricomycetes, brejo de altitude, fungi, phylogeny, taxonomy, wax caps.

Introduction Section Firmae Heinem. of Hygrocybe Fr. subgenus Pseudohygrocybe Bon is morphologically delimited by the presence of dimorphic basidia and basidiospores on the same basidioma (Heinemann 1966). A multi‐ locus phylogenetic analysis performed by Lodge et al. (2014) recognises the polyphyly of Hygrocybe section Firmae which is formed by three clades. Section Firmae s.s. includes species with the hyphae of the lamellar trama shorter than 140 μm in length, and basidia more than five times the length of the basidiospores (Lodge et al. 2014). The other two clades, belonging to subgenus Hygrocybe, were recently named as sections Pseudofirmae Lodge, Padamsee & S.A.Cantrell and Velosae Lodge, Ovrebo & Padamsee. Species belonging to these two sections possess hyphae of the lamellar trama longer than 140 μm and basidia less than five times the length of basidiospores. These two sections differ from each other in the presence of a partial veil in sect. Velosae (Lodge et al. 2014). Species of Firmae s.s. are restricted to the tropics (Heinemann 1966; Pegler & Fiard 1978; Cantrell & Lodge 2001; Vrinda et al. 2009; Senthilarasu et al. 2010), with six species occurring in Brazil: H. batistae Singer (Singer 1965), H. paraibensis Singer (Singer 1965), H. firma (Berk. & Broome) Singer (Pegler 1997), H. magnifica de Meijer (de Meijer 2008), H. martinicensis

Pegler & Fiard, (Magnano et al. 2015) and H. rubroalba Picciola, Battistin & Vizzini (Vizzini et al. 2015). During the course of our investigation into the agaric mycobiota from Paraíba, Brazil, specimens of Hygrocybe were collected which, after thorough morphological examination confirmed by phylogenetic analysis, are described as a new species in sect. Firmae.

Materials and Methods Collecting area Specimens were collected in Parque Estadual Mata do Pau Ferro in Areia municipality, Paraiba state (6°57'58.9"S and 35°44'55.15"W). This area is covered by a tropical wet mountain forest (up to 600 m alt.), known as "brejo de altitude". This humid forest
