Summary. Eremitis jardimii F.M.Ferreira & R.P.Oliveira (Poaceae, Bambusoideae), a new species of herbaceous
bamboo from the state of Bahia, Brazil, is described and illustrated, and the characters distinguishing it from E. robusta Hollowell, F.M.Ferreira & R.P.Oliveira are discussed. Key Words. Atlantic Forest, bamboos, endemic, IUCN Red List, Olyreae, Parianinae.
Introduction Eremitis Döll is a genus of herbaceous bamboos (Poaceae, Bambusoideae, Olyreae) endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, occurring from the states of Pernambuco to Rio de Janeiro (Judziewicz et al. 1999; Ferreira et al. 2019). It is one of the three genera assigned to the Neotropical subtribe Parianinae (Ferreira et al. 2013b; Vorontsova et al. 2016; Clark & Oliveira 2018; Ferreira et al. 2019). Parianinae is monophyletic and characterised by spiciform inflorescences with an articulated axis, spikelets in whorls, and staminate spikelets with glumes (Ferreira et al. 2019). Eremitis is defined by five morphological synapomorphies: truly underground culms, sympodial inflorescences on leafy culms, gynaecandrous and staminate spikelet whorls in the same inflorescence, staminate spikelet pedicels elongated and laminar only in the terminal whorl, and pubescent styles (Ferreira et al. 2019). The genus currently comprises seven species (Ferreira et al. 2013a, 2016, 2019, 2020) and many others to be described (Ferreira 2012). In her doctoral thesis, Hollowell (1987) cited five collections from the Brazilian state of Bahia (Calderón & Pinheiro 2039, 2184, Harley et al. 15004, Hollowell & Santos 3014, Hollowell et al. 3007), among other materials, in her circumscription of Eremitis “robusta” (formally described later by Ferreira et al. 2016). In the survey of the herbaceous bamboos from the state of Bahia, Oliveira (2001) cited those five specimens under Eremitis sp.1, along with several other collections accepted by Hollowell (1987) under E. “robusta” (for more details, see Ferreira et al. 2016). Based on new
collections throughout the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, we consider these taxa in a different circumscription from that adopted by Hollowell (1987) and Oliveira (2001). Reinterpreting their morphology, we describe here those specimens from Bahia as a new species of Eremitis. We also provide a line drawing, photos of living specimens, and information on the distribution and conservation status of the new species, as well as comparisons with the morphologically similar species E. robusta Hollowell, F.M.Ferreira & R.P.Oliveira.
