A new species of the Macrophthalmus boscii-group (Decapoda: Brachyura: Macrophthalmidae) from the Persian Gulf with designation of a Neotype for M. boscii Audouin (1826) Reza Naderloo & Michael Türkay

Abstract A number of characters were overlooked in the original description of Macrophthamus boscii Audouin in Animaux invertébr 1(4):77–98, 1826, therefore this species is redescribed from material collected close to the type locality and, as the type series is no longer extant, a Neotype is designated. M. sinuspersici sp. nov. is described from the Persian Gulf and distinguished from M. boscii in possessing a distinct stridulating ridge on the upper surface of the merus of the male cheliped (vs fully lacking in M. boscii) and by first male gonopod which has apical process inclined mesio-laterally, strongly emarginated (vs a remarkable plate-shaped apical process in M. boscii). Introduction Macrophthalmus boscii Audouin 1826 has long been believed to be a widely distributed species. This species has been recorded from the northern Red Sea from the Gulf R. Naderloo : M. of Suez area (Type locality) (Audouin 1826), the southern Red Sea: Eritrea (Maccagno 1936, as Macrophthalmus franchettii), the Gulf of Aden: Djibouti and Obock (Nobili 1906), the South and East African coasts (Barnard 1950; Crosnier 1965; Barnes 1970), through India (Kemp 1919) and Thailand (Komai et al. 1995; Naiyanetr 2007), to China (Dai and Yang 1991), Japan (Sakai 1939), Malay Archipelago (Barnes 1971) and as far south as Australia and New Caledonia (Barnes 1967). Ng et al. (2008) first noted the taxonomic complexity of M. boscii from different regions and highlighted the uncertainties of using the name M. boscii-complex. During the study of the Decapod crustacean community in the intertidal habitats of the Persian Gulf, and consequently undertaking a taxonomic revision of the family Macrophthalmidae Dana, 1851 in the region, small macrophthalmid specimens were found living on rocky shores, which were remarkably similar to M. boscii. Detailed morphological examination of our M. boscii-like specimens revealed that the Persian Gulf material is completely different from the descriptions and keys provided by several authors (e.g. Audouin 1826; Kemp 1919; Barnes 1970, 1971, 1973, 1976, 1977, 2010; Komai et al. 1995). The specimens all have a short stridulating ridge on the inner surface of the merus of the male cheliped, a character thought to be absent in the real M. bos
