Aciclovir Acute renal failure following exposure during third trimester of pregnancy: 4 case reports

In a study of 34 pregnant women with varicella infection and who delivered between 2012 and 2018, 4 pregnant women were described [ages not stated], who developed acute renal failure during treatment with aciclovir for varicella zoster infection. The pregnant women were diagnosed with varicella infection at 28–35 weeks of pregnancy. Immediately, following the diagnosis, the patients started receiving IV aciclovir 10 mg/kg every 8 hours. However, during the treatment, the patients exhibited elevated serum creatinine level to a maximum of 152–354µmol/L. Renal ultrasound was normal. The patients were diagnosed with acute renal failure. Therefore, aciclovir therapy was stopped. The patients received a total of 2–6 days of aciclovir therapy. The patients also received treatment with rehydration. After 1–22 days, the patients exhibited normal renal function. One of the patient developed preeclampsia at 37 weeks of pregnancy [pregnancy outcomes not stated] Boujenah J, et al.
