Immune thrombocytopenia: case report A 72-year-old woman developed immune thrombocytopenia during treatment with aciclovir for herpes zoster. The woman was hospitalised with moderate herpes zoster on left thorax area. She started receiving oral aciclovir 800mg five times per day for 10 days. On the seventh day of the treatment, she presented with ovalar haematomas on her left cubital area and right femoral area. Blood tests showed a decreased platelet count. ELISA test was positive for aciclovir-dependent platelet antibodies. She was diagnosed with aciclovir-induced immune thrombocytopenia. Aciclovir was discontinued, and the woman was treated with prednisone. Fifteen days after the discontinuation of aciclovir, the platelet count had normalised. Fekete GL, et al.
