Albendazole Ineffectivenss during treatment of liver lesions of hepatic mixed echinococcosis infection: case report
A man in his early 40s’ [exact age at treatment failure not stated] exhibited ineffectivenss during treatment with albendazole for liver lesions of hepatic mixed echinococcosis infection. At the age of 40 years, the man was hospitalised with intermittent right upper quadrant pain. On admission, he underwent multiple investigations, and diagnoses of hepatic alveolar echinococcosis with multiple intrahepatic metastases and multiple hepatic cystic hydatid disease were made. Also, he had hydatid lung metastases, and he tested positive for echinococcosis serum. He had been receiving albendazole, and he continued to receive treatment with oral albendazole 15 mg/kg/day twice a day for hepatic mixed echinococcosis infection. However, the albendazole therapy was not effective in the treatment of the liver lesions of hepatic mixed echinococcosis infection, and 2 years after initial hospitalisation, he was again hospitalised with recurrent abdominal pain and bloating for >2 months. The lesions had increased, and he had persistent abdominal pain and distension. Therefore, for the treatment of two-type hydatid disease, the man underwent hepatic right trifoliate resection and left hepatic duct jejunostomy, while he was admitted to hospital. He was discharged from the hospital with a tube on day 43 after surgery, and he had improved quality of life. Xu X, et al.
