Celecoxib First report of erectile dysfunction: case report
A 28-year-old man, who was receiving celecoxib 100mg capsule for periodic dental pain caused by an impacted tooth, presented with a 2-week history of erectile dysfunction [duration of therapy to reaction onset not stated]; celecoxib treatment would relieve his dental pain within 1 hour, but he reported consistent inability to achieve erection meanwhile. His erectile dysfunction resolved after celecoxib treatment, but recurred after a rechallenge with celecoxib 2 months later for dental pain. Author comment: "In our case, the Naranjo Algorithm for [adverse drug reaction] Causality Assessment association was probable. Though we do not know the mechanism of celecoxib-induced [erectile dysfunction] but cycloxygenase-2 inhibition can be presumed to have been responsible." Dhikav V, et al. » Editorial comment: A search of AdisBase, Medline and Embase did not reveal any previous case reports of erectile dysfunction associated with celecoxib. The WHO Adverse Drug Reactions database contained 33 reports of impotence associated with celecoxib.
