Elevation of serum carbohydrate antigen-72-4 level: case report A 62-year-old woman exhibited elevation of serum carbohydrate antigen-72-4 (CA-72-4) level during treatment with colchicine for pericardial effusion. The woman was hospitalised with chest pain, malaise and palpitation. Subsequent examination revealed leucocytosis, cardiomegaly, multiple lymphadenopathies, pericarditis and pericardial effusion. Therefore, she started receiving colchicine [route and dosage not stated] and ibuprofen. Subsequent laboratory examination showed elevated serum level of tumour marker CA-72-4 at 300 U/mL. Further examination did not reveal any evidence of malignancy. The elevation of serum CA-72-4 level was considered to be secondary to colchicine therapy [duration of treatment to reaction onset not stated]. Therefore, the woman’s therapy colchicine was discontinued. Upon follow-up, three weeks later, the serum CA-72-4 level was found to be normal. Author comment: "CA-72-4 elevation was considered to be associated with colchicine, so colchicine was discontinued." Gurbuz M, et al. Colchicine and serum CA72-4 elevation.
