Doxycycline Photoonycholysis: 2 case reports Two women developed photoonycholysis during malaria prophylaxis with oral doxycycline [Vibradox] 100 mg/day for 5 months [times to reaction onset not stated]; during that time, sun exposure had been moderate for 3 months and extreme for 3 weeks in both patients. The 25-year-old woman initially developed tenderness in her fingernails in mid December, followed by increasing pain and characteristic nail changes in early January. All finger nails showed distal half-moon shaped onycholysis surrounded by a brownish border, and her nail beds were erythematous. Her symptoms had completely resolved by early April. The 24-year-old woman noticed first signs of onycholysis in late December, with worsening nail changes similar to the ones described above over the next 4 weeks. Her symptoms had completely resolved approximately four months after onset. Wolf HT, et al. Photo-onycholysis observed in connection with doxycycline for malaria prophylaxis.
