Glycerol Pseudohypertriglyceridaemia in an elderly patient: case report A 74-year-old woman developed pseudohypertriglyceridaemia during treatment with glycerol for severe corneal ulceration. The woman had a 6-year history of chronic glaucoma and was admitted to hospital on 24 September 2006 for enucleation of her left eye. She presented with an elevated fasting serum triglyceride (TG) level of 784 mg/dL compared to 77 mg/dL in February 2006. Prior to admission, from 1 August to 23 September 2006, she received 50mL oral glycerol every 12 hours to treat a corneal ulcer on her left eye. After admission, her glycerol dose was increased to 50mL every 8 hours, resulting in a rapid increase in her fasting serum TG level to 1815 mg/dL and 2693 mg/dL on hospital days 2 and 3, respectively. On the second day after admission, glycerol was discontinued and fenofibrate was started, but after only receiving a single dose, it was discontinued. The woman’s fasting serum TG levels rapidly decreased on discontinuation to 59 mg/dL on the eighth day after admission. Author comment: "The present report shows that pseudohypertriglyceridemia could be induced by oral intake of [glycerol]." Charoenhirunyingyos W, et al.
