Imatinib Herpes zoster infection reactivation: case report A 56-year-old man started receiving imatinib [Glivec] 400mg daily for GI stromal tumour as part of an international patient-assistance programme and, after about 23 months, he developed multiple, dermatomally distributed, exquisitely tender and painful blisters on the left side of his trunk. At the time of eruption, his CD4+ cell count was 950/µL and lymphocyte counts were within normal limits. He was diagnosed with reactivated herpes zoster infection, and he started receiving aciclovir and analgesics. Within 1 week, his symptoms had promptly and significantly alleviated. Author comment: "The [herpes zoster] in this patient probably resulted from reactivation of dormant [varicella zoster virus] infection due to impaired cell-mediated immunity". Durosinmi MA, et al.
