Preface

The internal limiting membrane (ILM) surgery is the most updated and sophisticated technique in the field of vitreoretinal surgery. Peeling the ILM has been performed for several decades and is now one of the standard techniques in vitrectomy for various pathology including epiretinal membrane, macular hole, and diabetic macular edema. The beginning of the legitimate ILM surgery era was owing to ‘inverted ILM flap surgery’ reported by Michalewska and her colleagues in 2010. Since then, diverse modifications have been made by many researchers. Currently, ILM surgery is like a cauldron yielding new surgical techniques. It appears unestablished to be handled in a general vitreoretinal surgery textbook. The published papers provide too summarized information. Furthermore, the terminology has weak consensus, and the readers are prone to misunderstanding without reviewing many papers
