What is “intermittent hypoxia”? Does it play pathogenic roles in disease states, such as sleep-disordered breathing (sleep apnea), chronic pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancer? Or, quite to the contrary, does exposure to intermittent hypoxia induce protective responses? As the 25 chapters of this excellent collection attest, “intermittent hypoxia” means different things to different investigators.
