SPECIAL ADDRESS A.M. Molchanov Director of Research Computing Centre of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Pushchino, Moscow Region It is very pleasant to have such an abstract branch of mathematics represented here at our Centre for Biological Research. I'll not attempt an estimation (it will be best done by the participants themselves) of a possible interplay of this branch with biology. After welcoming you here as guests, I will say a few words on behalf of the "customers", i.e. biologists. But the biologists are not to be held responsible for what I am going to say. Mind that it's my personal opinion on their needs and problems. The biologists are in tremendous need of viewing the subject their own, and maybe our mathematical subject as well
from a different
standpoint, rather than being given mathematical methods and readymade theorems. They must have, so to speak, a sensible person to converse with. And the latter must be a professional too. A little example will clarify this judgement. Locusts, after hatching, creep over the land till, as biologists the mean area
