Metronidazole Nausea and metallic taste in mouth: case report A 48-year-old man developed nausea and metallic taste in mouth during treatment with metronidazole for Helicobacter pylori gastritis. The man, who experienced epigastric pain, burning and nausea in September 2013, was diagnosed with Helicobacter pylori gastritis in October 2013. He received 1-week course of amoxicillin, clarithromycin and omeprazole. Two months after the discontinuation of this treatment, the urea breath test confirmed the persistence of Helicobacter pylori infection. During this two-month period, he reported symptom recurrence, in particular epigastric pain and burning, which were treated with unspecified antacids and magaldrate. In January 2014, he received 1 week course of clarithromycin, oral metronidazole 500 [unit not stated] twice daily and omeprazole. Two months after the discontinuation of this treatment, the urea breath test again confirmed the persistence of Helicobacter pylori infection. Therefore, he received 2-week course of clarithromycin, omeprazole, polysorbate 80 and oral metronidazole 500 [unit not stated] twice daily. At the end of this treatment, he reported mild nausea with a metallic taste in the mouth, which were considered as side effects of metronidazole [outcomes not stated]. Two months after the discontinuation of clarithromycin, omeprazole, polysorbate 80 and metronidazole therapy, the man underwent a breath test and this time the result was found to be negative. Author comment: "Mild nausea with a metallic taste in the mouth was present (i.e., common side effects of metronidazole)." Di Stefano M, et al.
