Subacute peripheral neuropathy, nystagmus and encephalopathy: case report A 67-year-old woman developed subacute peripheral neuropathy, nystagmus and encephalopathy during treatment with metronidazole for a liver abscess. The woman had undergone a liver transplantation. After the liver transplantation, she had been receiving metronidazole continuously [dose and route not stated] for 65 days to treat a liver abscess. Subsequently, she developed subacute peripheral neuropathy, nystagmus and encephalopathy [time to reactions onsets not stated]. An electroneuromyography showed a sensory axonal polyneuropathy. An MRI of the brain revealed hyperintensities at the dentate nucleus and pons. The woman’s therapy with metronidazole was stopped. Within the first week, a complete improvement in the encephalopathy was noted. However, her neuropathy symptoms continued. Normal findings were observed on a control brain MRI performed after 30 days [not all outcomes stated]. De Oliveira LP, et al. Metronidazole neurotoxicity in late liver transplantation.
