Foreword

Mycorrhizal symbioses, found in almost all ecosystems, are fundamental to improve plant fitness and soil quality through key ecological processes. Mycorrhizal fungi have been shown to fulfil a broad spectrum of beneficial functions for their host plants as well as for their environments like improved nutrient and water uptake, enhanced tolerance against biotic and abiotic stresses and improved soil structure to counteract soil erosion. In the last decade, it has been observed that intensive agricultural practices like the use of large amounts of mineral fertilizers and pesticides can have severe effects on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and other fungal symbionts in soils and, consequently, can negatively impact plant nutrition and growth.
