Kounis syndrome: case report A 20-year-old woman with allergic asthma developed Kounis syndrome following treatment with naproxen sodium for dysmenorrhoea. After taking naproxen sodium [route and dosage not stated], the woman was admitted with a 1-hour history of nausea, vomiting and retrosternal chest pain [time to reaction onset not stated]. On examination, generalised erythema, dyspnoea and urticaria were observed. ECG findings revealed ST segment depression in leads III and aVF, and ST segment elevation in leads I and aVL. Her chest pain spontaneously resolved while being transferred to the coronary care unit, and her ECG normalised. The woman was administered oxygen, salbutamol [albuterol], corticosteroids and nitroglycerin [glyceryl trinitrate]. Her clinical condition subsequently normalised. Laboratory findings showed mild eosinophilia, as well as elevated levels of tryptase and specific IgE directed to NSAID. A diagnosis of Kounis syndrome type 1 variant was made. She experienced no further symptoms, and was later discharged. Atlay S, et al.
