Novel Opto-Electronic Braid System with Kumihimo-Structure as a New Concept of Flexible Electronics Kuniaki Tanaka and Sigekazu Kuniyoshi Chiba University, Department of Electronics & Mechanical Engineering Yayoi-cho, Chiba, 263-8522, Japan

ABSTRACT Following the new concept proposed as an opto-electronic integrated system with “textile structure”, we propose here another integrated system-concept of flexible electronics based on “braid structure”. The braid integrated system forms electronic equipment constructed by the filamentous body. Opto-electronic integrated circuits are constructed with Kumihimo-structure by weaving more than three threads on which various devices, and components, such as, transistors, photoelectric transducers, contact-electrodes, pads for wiring and other passive components of circuits are mounted periodically. From the experience of the designing of some basic logic circuits, the Kumihimo-structure weaved by eight-threads of two groups is proposed as a basic structure of the integrated circuit for application to single track braid system. Characteristics and elemental technologies of the braid system are analyzed for the extension of the concept. Application area of the system and requirements for the system are discussed. The braid system is also discussed in flexible electronics concept.

INTRODUCTION According to the situation recognition of a basic limit of electronics expansion in silicon planar technology, one proposal based on a new technology completely different from planar structure has been done [1-5]. The new concept of the technology with “textile structure” for integrated opto-electronic circuit has proposed. The concept was also discussed as an opto-electronic united circuit and a “Clothes” level system from application-view point. Because the textile system has the quite different stile from present electronics system, it has a great potential to develop as an integrated system, and it is necessary to achieve a lot of new elemental technologies, such as, making of cylindrical transistor and photoelectric conversion element on fiber, connecting and wiring technology, electrical and optical connection of individual devices and fibers. Though those are basic technologies of textile system that has the opto-electronic united function, many or more supporting technologies are needed to advance the new technology to the industry. According to the situation recognition of the above-mentioned, one proposal based on a new technical principle is done here. An opto-electronic braid integrated system with “Kumihimo

structure” is proposed as a novel electronic system and compared with the former proposed ”textile system” and the “planar system” of present technology. Here, a great potential of the new proposed system is discussed and examined from the side of flexible-electronics focusing to the system configuration. And it is also expected to build the new area where various adjoined technologies are constructed to support the integrated textile system.
