RAVI G L I D E d i s l o c a t i o n s o u r c e s of the F r a n k - R e a d type g i v i n g r i s e to a m u l t i p l e s y s t e m of c o n c e n t r i c d i s l o c a tion loops have b e e n o b s e r v e d in s i l i c o n . * The e x i s t e n c e of c l i m b s o u r c e s was f i r s t p r o p o s e d by B a r d e e n and H e r r i n g f In t h i s m e c h a n i s m of d i s l o c a t i o n m u l t i p l i c a tion edge c o m p o n e n t s a r e p o s t u l a t e d to c l i m b due to the p r e s e n c e of a n o n e q u i l i b r i u m c o n c e n t r a t i o n of point d e f e c t s in the v i c i n i t y of the d i s l o c a t i o n . Edge d i s l o c a tions a b s o r b o r e m i t point d e f e c t s and r e e s t a b l i s h e q u i l i b r i u m c o n d i t i o n s . When the edge s e g m e n t s a r e pinned at e i t h e r end by o t h e r d i s l o c a t i o n s which cannot c l i m b o r by s e c o n d p h a s e p a r t i c l e s o r p r e c i p i t a t e s t h e s e s e g m e n t s w i l l bow out n o r m a l to the slip plane to f o r m c i r c u l a r loops until the line t e n s i o n of the d i s l o c a t i o n b a l a n c e s the c l i m b f o r c e on the d i s l o c a t i o n . In a m a n n e r a n a l o g o u s to the F r a n k - R e a d glide s o u r c e the o r i g inal edge s e g m e n t can function a s a c l i m b s o u r c e f o r many c o n c e n t r i c d i s l o c a t i o n l o o p s . The o p e r a t i o n of t h i s m e c h a n i s m of d i s l o c a t i o n g e n e r a t i o n o r m u l t i p l i c a t i o n has b e e n o b s e r v e d in a n u m b e r of ionic c r y s t a l s .
