Paracetamol overdose Nausea following misuse and toxicity: case report
A 54-year-old man developed nausea secondary to drug toxicity following misuse of paracetamol in an overdose. The man, who had a history of psychiatric disease received hundred rectal 500mg paracetamol suppositories i.e. dose of 50g, over a period of 2.5 hours in order to reduce anxiety (misuse and overdose). After 7 hours, he presented to hospital with nausea and anxiety [outcome not stated]. Investigations revealed blood paracetamol concentration of 1094 mumol/L. After 11 hours, the concentration level peaked to 1292 mumol/L (drug toxicity), and at 19 hours it was 149 mumol/L. Eleven hours after the overdose, the man was initiated on acetylcysteine [N-acetylcysteine] infusion and enema. He was discharged after 2 days. Grass JN, et al. Rectal overdose of paracetamol.
