A Survey on Wireless Camera Sensor Networks Xiaolan Liu

Abstract Recently, with the development of low-power and low-complexity hardware such as camera sensors, wireless camera sensor networks have been widely used in the novel field, e.g., smart home and medical. Wireless camera sensor networks can provide richer information such as image and picture during a monitored environment. However, the large amount of image data produced by the camera sensors requires exploring new means for data storage, processing and communication. In this paper, we first introduce the concepts and characteristics of the wireless camera sensor networks and discuss the applications of wireless camera sensor networks. Moreover, we present the architectures involved in the wireless camera sensor networks, along with their algorithms and protocols. Finally, we discuss other research issues briefly. 106.1 Introduction During the past few years, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have gained fast development and become increasingly popular in many different application fields [1]. With the development of low-power and low-complexity hardware such as camera sensors, wireless camera sensor networks (WCSNs) have been widely used in the novel field, e.g., smart home and medical [2]. Unlike simple wireless sensor networks, the WCSNs are more complex, because cameras generate much more information such as image and picture and X. cameras are directional devices, which are low power devices called camera sensors and integrate processor, memory, power supply, radio, an actuator, wireless transceiver. However, the large amount of image data produced by the camera sensors requires exploring new means for data storage, processing and communication. In this paper we provide an overview of the current research directions, characteristics, architectures, and potential applications for wireless camera sensor networks. The rest of this paper is organized as follows. Section 106.2 introduces characteristics of wireless camera sensor networks, which are different from the other sensor networks. Section 106.3 describes several specific applications of wireless camera sensor networks in various fields. Section 106.4 present system architectures involved in the wireless camera sensor networks, along with their algorithms and protocols. Section 106.5 discusses other research issues by stressing topics such as barrier coverage, security, privacy, and data compression. Conclusions are given in Sect. 106.6.
