Adverse outcomes with in utero magnesium sulphate There is no clear exposure between in utero exposure to magnesium sulphate for beneficial indications and adverse neonatal outcomes, according to the results of a systematic review and meta-analysis reported in PLOS Medicine. The systematic review involved 197 studies, comprising 40 randomised trials, 138 non-randomised studies and 19 case reports. Magnesium sulphate was compared with placebo or no treatment, or as different regimes, including variations of dose, loading dose or route. The primary outcome of perinatal death was investigated in 22 randomised trials (55%). There were no clear between-group differences, nor clear differences in the incidence of other adverse outcomes. Compared with unexposed neonates, there were apparent increases in the risk of having an Apgar score
