Foreword

In the last 20 years, marked changes have occurred in the treatment of aortic regurgitation and ascending aortic aneurysm. Aortic valve repair and valve-­ preserving aortic replacement have been developed and refined, and they have now become reproducible procedures. The development has thus paralleled the evolution of mitral valve repair that took place 30 years ago. As in mitral valve repair, the development of differentiated repair concepts has stimulated further research into the mechanisms of aortic regurgitation. These results have in return contributed to further improvement of repair concepts. The editors and authors of this book have been actively involved in this dynamic evolution.
