Application of PBL Teaching Method in the Experimental Teaching of Hematologic Examination Min Sun, Ya Li Zhang, LiJun Gao and XinYu Cui

Abstract The PBL teaching method in the experimental teaching of hematologic examination was explored in this study. The experience on the application of PBL teaching method in the experimental teaching of hematologic examination reflected that the PBL teaching method had significant advantages in developing the students’ learning ability, practical ability and cooperative spirits of group, and arousing their active learning motivations, indicating that the PBL teaching method should be a valuable teaching method to be spread.

158.1 Introduction ‘‘Hematology and hematologic examination’’ is one of the major specialized courses in medical laboratory specialty. In this course, the students learn knowledge about the experimental diagnosis method and technology of hematology. As the students in this specialty, they are taught to achieve the purpose of mastering the c technology used for the correct diagnosis of diseases to provide some diagnostic evidences in laboratory for clinicians. In the former teaching, methods for the diagnosis of diseases in the course were simply introduced by the teachers to students one by one, and then the students just repeated the procedures to verify the methods and cognized the pathomorphology of given specimens which had been diagnosed definitely. Although the students could understand the basic skills and method of diagnosis in this way, they could not know how to comprehensively M. Sun (&) Y. L. Zhang L. Gao X. use or choose these methods to diagnose diseases correctly. PBL (problem-based learning) is a teaching–learning mode in which problems about the learning contents are taken as the focus to be discussed and studied by the students to achieve the purpose of solving problems. PBL was originated by Canadian McMaster University and has been known as an absolutely new teaching mode different from the traditional teaching method [1]. In order to take the disease diagnosis as the focus to improve the students’ abilities in thinking and solving problems independently, and in clinical thinking, the teaching method was introduced to the teaching of hematology and hematologic examination. We thought that the method should simultaneously improve the students’ ability of obtaining and evaluating information, and ability of teamwork and cooperation, shorten the gap between the basic medicine and clinical medicine, and make them become qualified clinical examination physicians so
