Chlorhexidine Allergic contact dermatitis to phenolsulfonphthalein excipient: case report A 28-year-old woman developed allergic contact dermatitis after application of a chlorhexidine solution; subsequent patch tests revealed a positive reaction to phenolsulfonphthalein, a component of the solution. The woman, who had a history of dermatitis following surgery, underwent ovarian cyst surgery. Chlorhexidine solution [Klorhexol] was applied for disinfection [dosage not stated]. The day after surgery, dermatitis appeared on the disinfected skin area and spread over her body. At presentation 1 week after surgery, she had dermatitis over her whole body, with a pustulopapular skin eruption on her back and abdomen. Patch testing showed positive reactions to the chlorhexidine solution and to phenolsulfonphthalein. A use test of the chlorhexidine solution, applied to her lower arm in two daily applications, showed pruritus and small papules after a few days and a positive result on day 7.
