Colestyramine/ursodeoxycholic acid No biochemical and clinical response in benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis: case report
A 23-year-old man exhibited no biochemical and clinical response during treatment with colestyramine and ursodeoxycholic acid for benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis. The man was diagnosed with benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis. On 30 March 2009, he started receiving ursodeoxycholic acid 500mg four times a day, colestyramine [cholestyramine] 4g three times a day [routes not stated] and antihistaminic tablet [specific drug not stated] as a first-line therapy. He exhibited no biochemical and clinical response, despite receiving adequate doses of ursodeoxycholic acid and cholestyramine for 10 days. On 10 April 2009, ursodeoxycholic acid and cholestyramine were replaced by rifampicin (off-label therapy) 300mg per day. Four weeks following the initiation of rifampicin (i.e. 11 May 2009), a significant improvement in the cholestasis was noted. Eight weeks following the initiation of rifampicin (i.e. 12 June 2009), he was free of symptoms and showed normal laboratory findings. He was on a regular follow-up for 10 months and did not show any further recurrence. Ermis F, et al. Benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis: Late initial diagnosis in adulthood.
