COMPOSITION OF THE FIELD SCABIOUS (Knautia arvensis L.) Ya. F. Kopyt’ko,1,* T. D. Dargaeva,1 and T. D. Rendyuk2 Translated from Khimiko-Farmatsevticheskii Zhurnal, Vol. 54, No. 7, pp. 41 – 48, July, 2020.
Original article submitted June 29, 2018. TLC analysis of Knautia arvensis demonstrated phenolcarboxylic acids and flavonoids. Spectrophotometric studies were run to assess the quantitative composition of phenolic compounds expressed as chlorogenic acid (from 1.05% to 2.08%), and it was proposed that this substance can be used for standardization of samples of Knautia arvensis herb. HPLC-UV identified the presence of o-coumaric, gallic, neochlorogenic, chlorogenic, caffeic, isoferulic, and rosmarinic acids, as well as hyperoside and kaempferol. Chlorogenic acid was present in the greatest quantity (0.29 – 0.60%). GLC-MS showed that hexane extracts contained 92 substances, including á-linoleic acid, ethyl esters of palmitic, palmitoleic, 13-methyltetradecanoic, and phenylacetic acids, phytol, diethylacetal isovaleraldehyde, hexahydrofarnesyl acetone, diethoxyethane, 14-methyl-8-hexadecenal, succinic acid diethyl ester, dihydrocitronellol, phenylacetaldehyde, and others. Keywords: Knautia arvensis, herb, composition.
bious is a potential source of MHM. The field scabious is included in the State Register of Medicinal Herbs 1996 – 2006 (Registration No. 95/335/681) in the List of Homeopathic Formulations approved for use in accordance with Ministry of Health and the Medical Industry Order No. 335 of November 29, 1995. The field scabious herb, in the form of infusions, broths, and alcoholic infusions, has long been used in traditional medicine to prepare detoxifying agents and anti-inflammatories, for the treatment of skin diseases [6, 7], and as an antiparasitic agent in veterinary medicine. Knautia arvensis herb [2] is used as a natural plant supplement in sheep feed to enhance growth and food digestion [8, 9]. Antiproteolytic, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, antimicrobial, diuretic, analgesic, and antioxidant activities have been observed with extracts of Knautia arvensis herb [10, 11]. The chemical composition of the field scabious has received insufficient study. Alcoholic extracts of field scabious herb prepared in Russia have been shown by HPLC to include phenolcarboxylic acids [12]. Knautia arvensis herb prepared in Poland and France has been shown to contain phenolcarboxylic acids (cryptochlorogenic, chlorogenic, 2-O-trans-caffeoylhydrocitric, 3,5-O-dicaffeoylquinic, 4,5-O-dicaffeoylquinic) and flavone glycosides (isovitexin7-b-glucopyranosyl, 7,4¢-dihydroxy-5-methoxyflavone-6-C-bD-glucopyranoside, knautoside) [13, 14], flavonoids,
Medicinal herbs and preparations made from them contain unique and diverse chemical compounds; only a small proportion of the enormous number of biologically active substances (BAS) generally present in raw materials of natural origin have been studied, which is often a
