Preface for the 2nd edition “Scientific work on the topic of extravasation of cytotoxic drugs is faced with many limitations.” This sentence, the introduction to the preface of the 1st edition of this book, is still fully valid for the revised 2nd edition. The reasons are partly to do with the difficulty and complexity of the problem—but only partly. The research question is a priori excluded from systematic work— prospective clinical studies, for example. Consequently, the knowledge gleaned is by necessity limited. Further difficulties include the lack of standardised processes in dealing with extravasation events, nonstandardised documentation, case studies with imprecise data, and uncertainty in predicting the expected extent of the damage. Knowing this state of affairs, the authors decided to update their original volume; the main emphasis of this revision was on original clinical articles. F
