DOE Notes 23 Universities Receive Research Instrumentation Awards Twenty-three universities will receive 26 awards totaling $4.9 to purchase state-ofthe-art scientific instruments for energyrelated research under DOE's University Research Instrumentation Program. The 1990 awards will help meet the needs of universities carrying out DOE-sponsored research in atomic and nuclear physics, biological and environmental research, chemical and coal sciences, geosciences, and materials research. Of the 26 awards, 9 went to the materials research category. Each instrument awarded under the program costs more than $100,000. In addition to the DOE award, each university will provide funds toward the total cost of the instruments. NRC Announces Ford Foundation Minority Scholarships Fellowships hâve been awarded to 188 minority scholars in two Ford Foundation programs administered by the National Research Council. Fifty-five predoctoral students and 33 doctoral dissertation candidates received awards in the fifth year of the Ford Foundation Predoctoral and Dissertation Fellowships for Minorities Program. Fellowships were also awarded to 30 doctoral degree récipients in the llth year of the Postdoctoral Fellowships for Minorities Program. Predoctoral fellowships provide funds for stipends and tuition for three years, and dissertation fellowships provide a 12month stipend. The 1991 fellowship compétitions are now under way. NSF Notes Graduate Fellowship Applications Due, Stipend Raised Applications for 1991 NSF Graduate and Minority Graduate Fellowships are due November 9,1990. The NSF plans to award approximately 900 new three-year Graduate Fellowships to individuals who hâve demonstrated ability and spécial aptitude for advanced training in science or engineering. Fellowships are awarded for study and research in science or engineering Ieading to master's or doctoral degrees in the mathematical, physical, biological, engineering, and social sciences, and in the history and philosophy of science. Students selected for awards in the 1991-1992 compétition will receive stipends of $13,500 for a 12month fellowship tenure.
