Preface

A new edition of a book is warranted when there is a need to update the book with current information and delete all obsolete information. Although research in nuclear medicine involving molecular imaging has progressed very well over the years through the discovery of newer radiopharmaceuticals, there are only a few radiopharmaceuticals that have been introduced into routine clinical use since the publication of the last edition. Also, some radiopharmaceuticals that were approved for clinical use a few years ago have been discontinued from the market because of the lack of utilization by the clinical community due to poor diagnostic outcomes. All these considerations have been taken into account to update this sixth edition, adding only newer information of potential clinical importance and eliminating the outdated information. Like the past editions, the book is intended to be a textbook on nuclear chemistry and pharmacy for nuclear medicine residents and students and as a reference book for nuclear physicians and radiologists. The basic format of the book remains the same as in previous editions, consisting of 16 chapters. Chapters 1, 2, 4, 6, 11 and 16 have no or only minor changes. Chapter 3 contains two new sections, namely, “Digital Image” and “PET/CT and SPECT/CT”. In Chap. 5, a couple of new generators have been added, including a section on calculation of 82Sr and 85Sr breakthrough, a recent requirement of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Several obsolete radiopharmaceuticals have been taken out and a few new ones have been added in Chap. 7, and Tables 8.1 to 8.3 have been updated to reflect these changes. A brief outline of USP Chapter has been included in Chap. 9. Tables 10.2 and 10.4 are updated with
