The present book is the result of a journey that began—if a date can be given—during my days as a degree student of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics in Bolzano. There I came in touch with the thought of Martin Heidegger thanks to Ivo De Gennaro who teaches philosophy at the Free University of Bolzano. But it was not Heidegger the man I was interested in. I was struck by the question of existence, the question of being, the problem of death, and the problem of nihilism. It just so happened that Heidegger is a philosopher who thinks after those questions in a most profound way. I remain grateful to Ivo De Gennaro’s sustained support and inspiration to think that he has given me for the better of 10 years now. While at Bolzano, I took a detour and studied for some time at the University of Washington in Seattle. Thanks to a generous scholarship from the University of Washington and the Italian Government, I was able to spend some time in the Pacific Northwest.
