Acute hepatitis: case report A 24-year-old woman started taking a herbal medicine, which contained artichoke extracts [Hepanephrol; dose not stated], 2 ampoules per day on 6 November 2005 for weight loss. On 30 November 2005, she was hospitalised with urticaria and weakness. Laboratory tests revealed increased levels of ALT (40 times the normal level), AST (48 times the normal level), alkaline phosphatase (1.3 times the normal level) and γ-glutamyl transferase (1.3 times the normal level). Hepanephrol was discontinued and her transaminase levels rapidly decreased. Her ALT and AST level had normalised at 3 and 2 weeks, respectively. Author comment: It was considered probable that Hepanephrol was the causative agent for the development of acute hepatitis in this patient, according to the assessment criteria developed at the International Consensus Meeting in 1991.
