Preface

This guide aims to support the scientific community in a time of ongoing funding strife and increased pressure on investigators to produce quality work under stringent limitations. Competent mentors, access to resources, and plentiful opportunities to learn are all factors that contribute to a funded independent research program. This guide is intended to supplement training or fill in knowledge gaps for young investigators in the demanding and occasionally complex process of applying for an NIH R01 grant.
