Preface
This qualitative, ethnographic and sociolinguistic study analyzes issues of language and Jewish identification pertaining to the Sephardim in Sarajevo. The complexity of Sarajevo Sephardic history means that I explore Bosnia-Herzegovina/Yugoslavia, Israel and Spain as possible identity-creating factors for the Sephardim in Sarajevo today. More specifically, the work is an attempt to determine how language and language- based ideologies shape Sarajevo Sephardim’s views of a sense of belonging to Bosnia-Herzegovina/Yugoslavia, Israel and Spain and to their respective societies and cultures. The study is moreover an analysis of the Sarajevo community itself, its cultural evolution, dilemmas and prospects in the Bosnia-Herzegovina of today. The main body of the monograph consists of empirical findings from semi-structured, individual interviews conducted with nine Sarajevo Sephardim from three generations between 2015 and 2018. These discussions helped me explore how Sephardim belonging to the different generations dealt (and continue to deal) with the challenge of cultivating hybrid and hyphenated identities under multiple regime changes and other destabilizing conditions.
