Levonorgestrel Various toxicities: 2 case reports In a retrospective audit of 20 women, who attended an integrated sexual health service for levonorgestrel intrauterine system (IUS) insertion in 2016–2017, 2 women [exact ages at the time of reactions onsets not stated] were described, who developed bleeding, low mood, occasional abdominal discomfort or spotting during treatment with levonorgestrel for contraception. The women underwent intrauterine insertion of levonorgestrel IUS [Jaydess] 13.5mg for contraception. However, one woman developed bleeding secondary to levonorgestrel and requested IUS reinsertion. The other woman developed low mood, spotting and occasional abdominal discomfort and requested IUS removal 3 months after IUS insertion [duration of treatments to reactions onset and outcomes not stated]. Author comment: "It is important to provide patients with information regarding potential risk of developing low mood or/and depression with progesterone only contraception." "[O]ne patient requested IUS reinsertion after having bleeding problems with [levonorgestrel]." Matytsina-Quinlan LA. Jaydess audit standards and benefits.
