Medal Awards 1997 Each year the Society awards medals for outstanding papers published in the Journal during the previous year. The Goodeve Medal is named in memory of Sir Charles Goodeve, one of the founders and pioneers of civilian Operational Research after World War II, and a leader for many years of the OR club and Society. The Goodeve Medal is awarded in recognition of the outstanding contribution to the philosophy, theory or practice of OR published in the Journal, in the relevant year. The Presidents Medal is awarded to the author(s) of the next most outstanding paper (although there is a restriction that at least one must go to a member of the Society). In 1997, the Goodeve is awarded to H Tsoukas (University of Cyprus) and D Papoulias (University of Athens) for their paper `Understanding social reforms: a conceptual analysis' (J Opl Res Soc 47: 853±863, 1996). The subject matter and arguments of this paper are of a
great interest and relevant to the OR process. It provides a helpful discussion of the effects of language and (thereby) of unthinking uses of measurement. In 1997 the President's Medal is awarded to CM Yates and T Rehman (University of Reading) for their paper `Integration of Markov and linear programming models to assess the farmgate and national consequences of adopting new bovine reproductive technologies in the United Kingdom agriculture' (J Opl Res Soc 47: 1327±1342, 1996). This is a novel and timely paper which attempts to model the effects of arti®cial insemination and embryo techniques in dairy and beef production at both farm and national level. It is methodologically valuable in that it combines Markov chain modelling with linear programming and should be of interest to a wider audience than just those working in argriculture.
