Paget’s Disease
Paget’s disease of bone is a benign disorder affecting 3–4% of the population over 40 years of age predominantly in Caucasian races (Smith et al. 2002). There is recent evidence of decreasing prevalence (Cundy 2006). The abnormality in Paget’s disease is excessive and abnormal remodelling of bone. Three pathologic phases have been described: the lytic phase, the mixed phase and the blastic phase. Initially there is osteolysis, followed by trabecular and cortical thickening and enlargement in the mixed phase of the disease, followed by sclerosis in the blastic phase. Paget’s disease is usually
