Abstract The petal-eyed swimmer crab, Vojmirophthalmus minabensis (Sakai 1961) is reported for the first time from the Indian coast. A single ovigerous female specimen was collected from the Nochikuppam fish landing centre, Chennai coast, southeast India. This species has previously been recorded only from the Sea of Japan and off the coast of Sarawak, Borneo. This report widens the knowledge of its distribution and range extension across the Bay of Bengal. Keywords Vojmirophthalmus minabensis . Podophthalminae . Petal-eyed swimmer crab . Chennai coast . Introduction The family Portunidae includes 39 genera with approximately 280 species belonging to different subfamilies including Podophthalminae (Santhanam 2018). The subfamily Podophthalminae comprises of five species under three genera, namely, Euphylax (Stimpson 1860), Podophthalmus (Lamarck 1801) and Vojmirophthalmus (Števčić 2011). Of the three genera, Podophthalmus and Vojmirophthalmus are distributed in the Indian Ocean while, Euphylax is restricted to the Eastern Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans. In India, only two species Podophthalmus vigil (Fabricius 1798) and Vojmirophthalmus nacreus (Alcock 1899) have been reported till date under the subfamily Podophthalminae (Trivedi et al. 2018). The genera Vojmirophthalmus include only two species, namely, V. minabensis and V. nacreus. While V. minabensis has been recorded only in the coast of Minabe-Machi (Japan) and Off Sarawak (Borneo), V. nacreus has been recorded in Andaman, Gulf of Martaban, around Indian Ocean rim, Western Pacific, New Caledonia and Northern Australia (Hosie 2012). The present study reports V. minabensis for the

first time from the Indian waters and thus, provides knowledge of its distribution and range extension in the Bay of Bengal.

Materials and Methods During a regular field survey, a single ovigerous female specimen of Vojmirophthalmus minabensis in fresh condition was collected from Nochikuppam fish landing centre (13°2′54“ N 80°14’44” N), Chennai, Southeast coast of India on 30th May, 2019. The specimen was identified following the taxonomic descriptions of Sakai (1961) and Bruce (1965) and deposited in the Marine Biological Research Center (MBRC), Zoological Survey of India, Chennai (Reg. No: ZSI/MBRC/ D1–608).
