PREFACE
These Proceedings form a record of the lectures delivered at the sixth Conference on Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations which was held at the University of Dundee, Scotland during the week Monday 31 March to Friday 4 April 1980. The Conference was attended by more than 120 mathematicians from Europe, North America, South Africa and Australia. The Conference was organised by a Committee with membership: E R Dawson, W N Everitt, B D Sleeman. Following again the tradition set by the earlier Dundee Conferences the Organising Conunittee named as Honorary Presidents of the 1980 Conference: Professor F M Arscott (Canada and UK) Profess or Ake P leij e 1 (Sweden). The Conunittee thanks all mathematicians who took part in the work of the Conference. The Conunittee thanks: the University of Dundee for generously supporting the Conference; the Warden and Staff of West Park Hall for all their help in providing accommodation for the participants; colleagues and research students in the Department of Mathematics for help during the week of the Conference; the Bursar of Residences and the Finance Officer of the University of Dundee. As for the previous two Conferences the Committee records special appreciation of a grant from the European Research Office of the United States Army; this grant made available travel funds for participants from
IV
Europe and North America, and also helped to provide secretarial services for the Conference.
In this respect the Committee is grateful
to Dr S H Lehnigk of the ERO Office in London for much helpful advice. The Professors Everitt and Sleeman record special thanks to their colleague Commander E R Dawson RN who carried the main responsibility for the accommodation of all participants in West Park Hall.
Also
special thanks are due to Hr s Norah Thompson and !1rs Dorothy Hargreaves, Secretaries in the Department of Nathematics for their invaluable contribution to the work and organisation of the Conference
