Foreword
While there have been many important events shaping the history and development of school psychology, none is greater than the fact that, long ago, applied psychologists generically called clinical psychologists with specialized training in assessment, child development, behavior management, and special education chose to take employment in the public schools. That is, they became employees of the school system rather than consultants to it from outside the system. This event would forever link school psychologists to the two worlds of professional education and professional psychology that continue to characterize our field’s training and accreditation, credentialing, organizational structure and representation, day-to-day practice expectations, and varied sources of supervision. It also connected the developments within school psychology, one of the few psychology fields in which women were welcomed in positions from the classroom to school administration. That connection would facilitate a larger presence of women in school psychology than in other areas of the profession.
