Sulfonylureas overdose Hypoglycaemic symptoms: 8 case reports

Eight women with diabetes mellitus, aged between 38 and 74 years, accidentally ingested supratherapeutic doses of tolazamide (patients 1, 3 and 8), glibenclamide (patients 2, 5 and 7), glimepiride (patient 4) or glipizide (patient 6) and developed symptoms of hypoglycaemia. These cases are from a retrospective review of calls made to a poison control centre from 2000–2003. After ingesting supratherapeutic doses of sulfonylureas, patients reported feeling dizzy (patients 1, 3, 5 and 6), shaky (patients 2, 7 and 8) and clammy (patient 4) [time to reaction onsets not stated]. None of the patients had blood glucose levels of < 60 mg/dL [see table]. All patients ingested carbohydrate or glucose supplementation at home. Subsequently, all the patients experienced resolution of symptoms.
