With the dawn of the twenty-first century has come the realisation that bone and joint diseases are the major cause of pain and physical disability worldwide. Moreover, according to the WHO Scientific Group, there are more than 150 diseases and syndromes of musculoskeletal conditions, usually associated with pain and loss of function. It is undoubtedly these insights that prompted the WHO to declare the first 10 years of the new century as “The Bone and Joint Decade 2000–2010”.
