Zolpidem Sleep-related eating disorder: case report A 53-year-old woman developed a sleep-related eating disorder while receiving zolpidem for insomnia [route, dosage and duration of treatment to reaction onset not stated]. The woman, who had been receiving zolpidem for more than 5 years, presented with episodes of cooking, eating and drinking during nocturnal sleep time, with subsequent amnesia. Her symptoms included morning fatigue, nausea and anorexia, and she reported a weight gain of 6kg over the previous year. An episode of eating was recorded on home video, and another episode of eating during stage N1 sleep was seen on polysomnography. Her sleep was fragmented and unstable, with frequent phase changes. She had an excessive arousal index and a respiratory disturbance index (RDI) of 14.7. Zolpidem was discontinued, resulting in cessation of the woman’s night eating episodes. At last follow-up, her sleep had improved and no abnormalities were seen on polysomnography. She had lost 5kg and her RDI had decreased to 11.6. Author comment: "We report a video-supported case of zolpidem-induced SRED [sleep-related eating disorder]." Nzwalo H, et al.
