Zolpidem Amnesia and compulsive activity: 3 case reports Three women developed amnesia and compulsive activity during treatment with zolpidem for insomnia. After taking zolpidem 10mg and trazodone at bedtime [frequency and duration of treatment not clearly stated], a 34-year-old woman proceeded to clean the floor instead of falling asleep. She could not recall this action in the morning, but became suspicious after seeing the clean floor. The following night, she started cleaning the floor about 10–20 minutes after taking zolpidem, and a second time before going to sleep. She talked normally during this time but, in the morning, she could not remember cleaning. Her compulsive cleaning behaviour did not occur when she stopped zolpidem and took trazodone only. One month later, she twice took zolpidem 5mg and trazodone at bedtime, and experienced compulsive shopping combined with anterograde amnesia after each of the two zolpidem doses. She stopped zolpidem and her compulsive amnesic behaviour did not recur. A 40-year-old woman, who had a habit of night-time eating, had been receiving zolpidem 15mg for the previous 3–4 months [frequency not stated]. After her zolpidem dose, and before falling asleep, she experienced episodes of uncontrolled eating. She displayed partial anterograde amnesia and recalled only having an uncontrolled desire to eat sometimes after taking zolpidem; she talked fluently during those episodes. Her zolpidem dose was reduced to 10mg without improvement of her symptoms. Zolpidem was stopped and her compulsive behaviour did not recur. A 50-year-old woman took zolpidem 10mg on five occasions and compulsively swept her house after every dose. She could only remember sweeping when she found her home clean each morning. Her symptoms did not recur after zolpidem was stopped. Author comment: "[C]ompulsive activities after zolpidem use may be secondary to increased blood flow of bilateral frontal lobes."
