ABSTRACT
Successful disintegration of Chlorpyrifos pesticide by nearly monodisperse nano-gold photcatalyst (~10 nm) for remediation of wastewater has been reported in current studies. Nano-Gold dispersion reaction with Chlorpyrifos solutions completes in 45 minutes at ambient temperature under the normal daylight and exhibit systematic variations in the solution color from wine red to pink to light sky blue and finally transforming into a transparent solution with fine precipitates. UV-Vis absorption studies correlates well with the systematic color changes as observed in the nano-gold treated Chlorpyrifos solutions with time. The characteristic localized surface plasmon resonance peak of nanogold dispersion observed at 529 nm red shifts to weak, medium and strong intensity peaks at ~ 640 nm, 740 nm and 890 nm on increasing chlorpyrifos concentration owing to the aggregation of gold nanoparticles in small to bigger sized clusters. The fine turbidity in final transparent solution further confirms the aggregation of nanogold particles into stable bigger ensembles. IR transmission spectra of final transparent solutions showed disappearance of Chlorpyrifos C-Cl and phosphorothioate functional group peaks indicating degradation of chlorpyrifos.

INTRODUCTION Pesticides have been excessively used all over the world to save crops from insects, pests and rodents for increasing the yield and quality of agricultural products [1– 3]. The excessive usage of these deadly pesticides have polluted all the natural resources namely air, water and soil which now became a threat for all living beings. Chlorpyrifos (CP), [O,O-diethyl O-(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl) phosphorothioate] with molecular formula C9H11C13NO3PS, a member of organophosphate pesticide family has been extensively used as herbicides, pesticides, and insecticides in agriculture for fruits and vegetables, homes, gardens and veterinary all over the world. The sprayed CP on fruits and crops affects the health and life of all living beings. In human body, long exposure to OP compounds inhibit acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) enzyme activity at neuromuscular junction which dysfunction the peripheral and central nervous systems and also develops respiratory, digestive and muscular problems. In view of its lethal ramifications, United States Environmental Protection Agency has prohibited it
