Ever since the evolution of mankind on Earth, their interaction with plants has never ceased. In fact it will be fit to say that man co-evolved with plants. If the only living planet draws its sustenance from the plants, then mankind cannot escape their absolute dependence on anything and everything that plants produce and provide them with – be it food, clothing, shelter, health, entertainment, luxury, wealth, etc. In natural ecosystems, plants face a plethora of antagonists that necessitate the possession of many types of defenses, and as a result plants have evolved multiple defense mechanisms by which they are able to survive various kinds of biotic and abiotic stresses by adaptation. This displays a tremendous metabolic plasticity that is well illustrated by their ability to synthesize masses of so-called secondary organic compounds (‘natural products’) that seems to be crucial for growth and development One of the major secondary plant metabolites are the phenolics.
