Hypoglycaemia: 2 case reports In a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2 men aged 50–57 years were described, who developed hypoglycaemia following misuse of over-the-counter sexual enhancement supplement containing sildenafil [routes, amounts misused, times to reactions onsets and outcomes of ADRs not stated]*. A non-diabetic 57-year-old man (first case), presented to an emergency department of a centre in the USA in 2019 with increasing agitation, profuse sweating and confusion. Blood glucose was noted to be 48 mg/dL, which was below the normal range, indicating severe hypoglycaemia. He reported that he had used an over-the-counter sexual enhancement supplement [V8] after he was unable to fill sildenafil prescription (drug misuse). He was treated with glucose [dextrose]. Testing of the supplement revealed that it contained sildenafil roughly at a therapeutic dose in every tablet. Severe hypoglycaemia was linked to the misuse of sildenafil supplement. Later, the sildenafil supplement was removed from the market. A non-diabetic 50-year-old man (second case) presented to a centre in the USA in 2019 with trembling, sweating and confusion. Blood glucose level was noted to be 32 mg/dL, indicating severe hypoglycaemia. He reported that he had taken an over-the-counter sexual enhancement supplement [V8; drug misuse]. He was treated with glucose [dextrose] by the emergency medical services in the USA, and was hospitalised for 3 days. Testing of the supplement revealed that it contained sildenafil roughly at a therapeutic dose in every tablet. Severe hypoglycaemia was linked to the misuse of sildenafil supplement. Later, the sildenafil supplement was removed from the market. * Reporter country was not stated. Unable to contact author. Kuehn BM. Severe hypoglycemia linked with over-the-counter supplement.
