Abstract When analyzing the spatial evolution characteristics of urban and rural settlements with traditional methods, there is a problem of incomplete characteristic analysis results. For this reason, a GIS analysis method of spatial evolution characteristics of urban and rural settlements in Inner Mongolia is proposed. Using GIS spatial analysis and nuclear density estimation methods to analyze the evolution characteristics of Kangbashi New Area, the results are as follows: From 2006 to 2015, the number of settlement patches in the Kangbashi New Area continued to increase, with significant spatial expansion characteristics, and the settlement patches showed obvious spatial agglomeration characteristics towards the water. Zalut Banner is a semi-agricultural and semi-pastoral area where Mongolians and Han people live together, and most of them are Mongolian; the rural settlements are mostly agricultural villages, which are large and dense, with the majority of Han residents. Introduction Settlement refers to the place where people live and produce. It refers not only to the aggregation of houses and buildings needed for residence but also to other production and living facilities directly related to residence. According to the records of “Han History”: “For a long time harmless, the little house is built, then became into a settlement.” Therefore, the settlement carries a variety of activities of daily production and life, leisure and entertainment, religious, and cultural activities (Gao et al. 2017). Settlements are constrained by economic, social, historical, geographical, and other conditions. They are a comprehensive reflection of natural and socio-economic This article is part of the Topical Collection on Geological Modeling and Geospatial Data Analysis * Xiuming Dong [email protected] 1

factors, reflecting certain regional characteristics. Generally, settlements can be divided into two categories: rural and urban. Settlement is the spatial representation and important space carrier of the interaction between human and nature. It is also the main object of the study of human geography. The density and distribution, scale, and grade of rural settlements in different parts of China are obviously different due to the differences in nature, society, history, and culture. This difference and the various geographic “flows” caused by it are particularly
