Foreword

It is a pleasure to write the foreword for this excellent book, edited by my good and enthusiastic friend Konstantin Yastrebov, whose mates call him “Stan”. This book is designed for anaesthesiologists, intensivists, emergency physicians as well as cardiologists who wish to extend their knowledge in the most advanced current technology while providing advanced echocardiography services for critically ill patients. For a while, anaesthesiologists, intensivists and emergency physicians have been shy to use echocardiography, suffering from an inferiority complex. However, echocardiography has become the main tool to assess the heart and haemodynamic physiology in critically ill patients. Critical care echocardiography has spread all over the World with almost all countries developing courses and training programs. Konstantin Yastrebov was one of the first in Australia to understand the importance of this technique for the assessment of patients with shock and respiratory failure. For over two decades he has actively promoted the use of this technique in Australasia, Europe and many other parts of the World from his positions as a Director of Intensive Care Unit in Tasmania, as a Chair of Cri
